What could the electric vehicle (EV) revolution mean for nuclear power?

Brandon Munro's plenary speech at the World Nuclear Association Symposium 2018 addressed the electric vehicle (EV) revolution and the impact it would have on electricity demand. He discussed how the nuclear energy industry could have a greater role in ensuring that electric vehicles are powered by emissions free electricity.

The electrification of passenger and industrial vehicles is projected to grow dramatically over the next 15 years. EVs’ popularity and policy support stem from reduced carbon emissions and localised air pollution. However, as the EV revolution gains momentum, enormous volumes of hydrocarbon energy will be displaced by grid electricity requirements. How those increased grid requirements will be met is vital for achieving true carbon reductions and the grid stability of cities worldwide. Clean, resilient, base-load nuclear power is the logical choice to ensure the EV revolution achieves its carbon policy potential.

This 2018 presentation considered the following:

• Overview of EV adoption: fact and possibility
• Analysis of three recharging infrastructure scenarios
• Potential grid impact and the role of nuclear power

Brandon Munro is Chief Executive Officer of Bannerman Resources Ltd, an ASX-listed company focused on developing the Etango uranium project, situated 20 km from CGN’s Husab Mine in Namibia.
