Why is Lord Vishnu worshipped as a Shaligram stone?

It is the result of a curse by Vrinda (Tulsi). This story of sacrifice and redemption explains why Tulsi Vivah is the most sacred union in Hinduism.

Once, there was a demon named Jalandhara, whose power was fueled by the unwavering purity of his wife, Vrinda. As long as Vrinda remained chaste, Jalandhara was invincible (even against the gods.)

To restore balance, Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhara and appeared before Vrinda. The moment she touched him, her spiritual armor shattered, and Jalandhara was defeated. When Vrinda realized the deception, her heartbreak shook the cosmos.
She cursed Vishnu: "Since you acted like a heartless stone, you shall become one."

Vishnu accepted the curse and manifested as the Shaligram stone. But moved by her devotion, He blessed her: Vrinda would be reborn as the Tulsi plant, and He would never accept an offering without her by His side. Their union proves that even in betrayal, the Divine honors true love.

वृंदा (तुलसी) और शालिग्राम की कहानी भक्ति और बलिदान की पराकाष्ठा है। जालंधर की शक्ति उसकी पत्नी वृंदा के पातिव्रत धर्म में थी। ब्रह्मांड की रक्षा के लिए विष्णु जी ने छल से उस कवच को तोड़ा। क्रोधित वृंदा ने विष्णु जी को पत्थर होने का श्राप दिया, जिससे वे 'शालिग्राम' बने। लेकिन विष्णु जी ने वृंदा की पवित्रता को सम्मान देते हुए उन्हें 'तुलसी' बनने का वरदान दिया और वचन दिया कि वे उनके बिना कभी कोई भोग स्वीकार नहीं करेंगे।
