“Health and Activism in a South African Township”
In this continuing series of Global Health Conversations, Mr. Majola will discuss his career path, his work as a health activist, as well as how he and the community groups he leads have pivoted to provide critical resources during the COVID crisis.
Mandla Majola is an activist and community organizer for more than 20 years in South Africa. He was a leader in the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) for more than 15 years where he held numerous positions and led multiple campaigns including for universal access to antiretrovirals for people with HIV/AIDS, against xenophobic attacks aimed at foreign nationals and against gender-based violence for women and children in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
In 2011 and 2012, working for Social Justice Coalition (SJC) Mr. Majola led a campaign for water and sanitation for people in the informal settlements and a separate campaign for a commission of inquiry to investigate the breakdown of the relationship between the community of Khayelitsha and local police.
Mr. Majola is the founding member of the Movement for Change and Social Justice (MCSJ) where he has worked to improve the public health system and reduce gender-based violence in poor communities. Since last year he has been at the forefront of a fight against COVID 19.
Mr. Majola has been able to strategically build a network that benefits poor communities. He has developed leaders in different communities in order to sustain the social impact and change.
