Why Do People Wait Until You’re Gone?

People stay silent while you’re alive. They notice your value, your kindness, your struggle — but rarely say it. Then death arrives, and suddenly the words come pouring out. Respect. Admiration. Love. Too late to be heard.

Dostoevsky exposes something uncomfortable about human nature: many people only recognise worth once there’s no longer anything to gain, fear, or compete with. The absence makes them honest in ways presence never could.

Flowers arrive after the funeral.
Praise arrives after the silence.
And the dead hear none of it.
