It Died Protecting Its Eggs — And We Named It a Thief | Primal Lore

Oviraptor means “egg thief.”
And that may be one of the most unfair names in all of science.

When Oviraptor philoceratops was named in 1924, paleontologists believed it had died while stealing eggs from a Protoceratops nest in the Gobi Desert. The accusation became permanent. The name literally means egg thief, with a supposed love of ceratopsian eggs built into the species name itself. But decades later, the story collapsed. Brooding specimens were discovered preserved over nests in bird-like posture, and embryo evidence showed the eggs belonged to Oviraptorids themselves. The animal was not stealing eggs. It was protecting them.

That is what makes Oviraptor unforgettable. This was not a villain of the Late Cretaceous. It was a feathered, beaked, bird-like dinosaur showing parental care that looks strikingly modern. And even after the science corrected the accusation, the name stayed. Under zoological naming rules, the original name keeps priority. So one of the best-known dinosaurs in history is still permanently branded for a crime it almost certainly did not commit.

Science note: Oviraptor’s innocence is supported by embryo-bearing eggs and multiple brooding oviraptorid fossils. Feathering is reconstructed from close relatives and broader oviraptorosaur evidence.
