With a long history in the aquarium hobby, these Amazonian cichlids still have quite a following. Although large, their placid temperament means that they can be kept alongside large community fish and few cichlids of their size are such amenable tank mates. Previously thought to be one species with a large distribution, the fish our predecessors knew as 'Cichlasoma severum' has been split into a number of species and variants.
