Is nuclear energy a clean energy source?
How green is nuclear energy? Would you be surprised if we told you that nuclear energy is one of the most effective green energy sources on the planet? If so, you will be quite shocked after watching this video.
People generally tend to think of nuclear energy as something bad since most think nuclear energy has something to do with nuclear weapons. Moreover, nuclear has a bad reputation due to nuclear power plant disasters such as Chernobyl and Fukushima. Most people think that nuclear energy is hazardous and very hard to control.
The best way to correct these misunderstandings is to answer two basic questions: “What is nuclear energy and how does it work?” Then we can go into the ones like, “How clean is a nuclear power and how clean is nuclear energy?”
In a nutshell, nuclear power plants produce electricity from nuclear energy. Through a process called fission, uranium atoms are split, and nuclear energy originates. This process generates heat to produce steam, and the steam is used to produce electricity by means of a turbine generator.
Considering how nuclear weapons work, these two systems use completely opposite ways to benefit from fission. Also, nuclear energy is one of the safest ways to produce energy, and disasters like Chernobyl or Fukushima are unfortunate exceptions. Statistically speaking, major accidents are relatively low.
Moreover, nuclear energy is more efficient in a number of ways compared to traditional green energy sources such as solar or wind.
Although these misconceptions are understandable to some extent, nuclear energy, from the fact that it is zero-emission to waste-efficient, is an excellent way to produce green energy. If you are curious about the importance of nuclear power and want to learn more about it, take a look at our video for more details!
