Victoria has recorded 671 new coronavirus infections as authorities prepare to tighten restrictions in a desperate attempt to smother the surging outbreak.

Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday afternoon also confirmed seven further coronavirus deaths within the state, six connected to clusters in aged care.

With the Melbourne outbreak showing no signs of slowing, Victorian health authorities are preparing to introduce further stage four restrictions - including a tougher Melbourne lockdown and more business closures.
