In this game you control Mr. Do and the aim of the game is to harvest cherries. To complete a screen you can either harvest all of the cherries or kill all the enemies. The enemies can be killed by digging a tunnel from the bottom of the screen up to an apple, you then stand under the apple, and move away when an enemy enters the tunnel – the apple will then fall down on the enemy. You can also push the apples so they drop down from the edges. Another way to kill the enemies is by throwing your power ball at them, but you only have one, and when you have thrown it you will have to wait for it to return before it can be used again.

It is possible to gain extra lives by shooting a monster that is running around with the letters: E, X, T, R, A. When you have collected all of the letters you will gain an extra life. The game has 10 levels and they loop three times with increasing difficulty, so level 31 is the same as level 1, and this walkthrough stops when reaching level 31.

Mr. Do is an arcade game from 1982 and it was ported to almost all systems except the ZX Spectrum, but now it is finally here. The game is an all time classics and the gameplay is very good and can easily hold up for today’s standards. It is well ported to the Spectrum and it has the same levels and features as the original game, but the screen layout had to be changed a bit because of the difference between the smaller but higher arcade screen and the Spectrum’s screen. The music and sound fx is also very well made and faithful to the original.

Unfortunately this game is made with the Spectrum’s standard attribute color system which causes a lot of color clash from Mr. Do and the enemies when they are moving in the tunnels. The same issue could be seen in the clone “Farmer Jack in Harvest Havoc” from 2006. All this clash is pulling the game down from being a super port of a very good arcade game. Today there is multi color engines available and a game like this has to be made with one of these to avoid this clash.

The game is fun and tough and provides a good challenge and if you can live with the color clash it is worth checking out this classic game that is now available in a ZX Spectrum version!

Coding and sound has been made by Adrian Singh (known as “Mr. Poke” for Sinclair User magazine) and the graphics has been made by Mark R Jones (ex-Ocean software graphics designer).
