10 Secret Food Scams You Always Fall For

Like and subscribe right now, or this spider will crawl on your face when you’re sleeping.
We’ve all seen viral posts online about the tactics used by fast food chains, supermarkets and
restaurants to try and make us think we are getting a bargain when actually we are not. Today
we are exposing the ten secret food scams that you always fall for. Keep watching and take
note.

10) Low Quality Ice Cream
Ice cream is a food that people of all ages can enjoy. Its creamy and smooth texture gives us a
sense of comfort but there are two different tiers of ice cream when it comes to quality. Some
ice cream brands whip lots of air into their ice cream and this increases the size, so you think
you are getting more for your money. More expensive ice cream might cost more but you
actually get more for your money as there is far less air in it. The difference can be seen when
the ice cream melts, as this only leaves the ingredients and not the air. It isn’t just cheaper ice
cream companies that are whipping up their products however. Breyers ice cream company
changed the way it labels its products from ice cream to frozen dairy dessert – the difference
between the two? Air. This leads to customers paying for products that could contain up to
50% air!
9) Healthy Options
Now, when we think of fast food, we think of greasy meat and salty fries but some of us do
look for slightly healthier options! Fast food companies use bright colors in their packaging,
advertising and décor which is meant to get across the idea that their food is fresher and
healthier than the competition. The colors remind customers of fresh fruit and veg that trick
your brain into thinking that you are being slightly healthy even if you are tucking into a greasy
burger. When ordering healthier options, you will be very surprised to learn that what you think
is healthy, may not be much better for you than traditional fast food. The minute a customer
reads salad on a menu, they assume that it is a far better choice however, a McDonalds
Southwest Buttermilk Chicken salad actually contains only 20 calories less than a Big Mac –
we know which one we’d rather be tucking in to!
8) Unknown receipt charges

Number 8 might be one of the most surprising scandals on our list as it will directly cost you
money. Because fast food is usually grabbed on the go, most of us won’t check the receipt
after we pay for it. But take our advice and look at it as there have been cases where extra
charges have been included and people are paying too much. This was discovered when a
man in Illinois looked at his check and found at extra $9 had been charged by food chain
Panera. When he discussed this with the manager, he was offered free pastries as an apology.
The company described the situation as an ‘inaccurate receipt’ due to a glitch in their system –
but how many glitches have there been where people have been overcharged?
7) Plumping
Coming in at number 7 is definitely our most stomach-turning discovery. Plumping is a trick
that companies use to increase the size of their products so that customers think that they are
getting a better deal. Plumping is mostly used by supermarkets who are competing for low
prices. It refers to a process during which water is artificially injected into products like meat to
make it expand, look larger and weigh more. Studies have found that some supermarket
chicken contains up to 30% water – so it is actually around a third smaller than it looks in the
packaging.
One way that you can try and spot this is by taking a look at the packaging – the information
may state that the meat has been injected with a certain percentage of solution. The solutions
usually include salt, water and preservatives. When cooked, or defrosted the meat loses a lot
of the water and you end up with a much smaller portion that you expected – how
disappointing!
6) Reduced Portions

Number 6 is the only scam in our countdown that has been called out on the Conan O’Brian
show! Actor B. J. Novak used the show to complain about a reduction in size of Cadbury’s
Crème Eggs which are now a couple of grams smaller. Companies reduce the amount of their
product within the packaging slowly over time so that customers don’t notice until there is a big
difference.
