Calgary 911 Operator Fined After Leaking Police Files to Crime Gang
On June 2025, Marian Buonincontri — a 911 call taker for the City of Calgary with direct query access to Calgary Police Service, CPIC, and linked RCMP databases — pleaded guilty to three counts of collecting, using, and disclosing personal information without authority under Alberta's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act at Calgary Court, receiving a $30,000 fine of $10,000 per count from Justice Karen Molle after original criminal charges including breach of trust, fraudulent use of a computer system, and mischief in relation to CPS and RCMP data were dropped as part of a joint sentencing recommendation. A Calgary Police Service investigation spanning more than a year, led by Detective Jennifer MacDougall and prosecuted by Crown organized-crime specialist Brian Holtby, found that between March 1, 2022 and January 26, 2023, Buonincontri used her personal cellphone to photograph her workplace computer screens more than 200 times, capturing protected police database queries on specific individuals, vehicles, and addresses, and transmitted those images to contacts associated with the FK and Independent Soldier gangs in Calgary. The investigation was triggered in December 2022 when CPS detectives discovered images of sensitive police database searches on the phones of gang-affiliated men during two unrelated operations in a six-week period — a cross-match that identified an inside source. As a release condition Buonincontri was prohibited from contacting Steven Mark Teti and Domenico Loiacono. Detective MacDougall's search-warrant ITO noted that some of the leaked information described innocent, uninvolved bystanders whose safety could not be assessed.
