Captured by VisionHawk Films, first-ever infrared 360 camera reveals how a mountain lion stashes her kill in a rancher’s barn.
Paradise Valley, Montana is around 60 miles north of Yellowstone National Park. The area offers sweeping views of the Absaroka and Gallatin mountain ranges and abundant access to outdoor activities. For many people, it’s a coveted vacation spot. For mountain lions, it’s home.
Despite this coexistence, sightings of mountain lions (also known as cougars) are rare. These elusive big cats are most active at night and tend to avoid people when possible. Join VRtually There for a rare infrared view of a mother feasting and her two kittens in the video below.
Mountain lions tend to hide their kills to protect them from scavengers, and then feed on them over the course of a few days. This mountain lion is using an abandoned barn as her food cache. According to the property owner, she lives in the caves in the mountains behind the homestead and hunts in the valleys below. On this particular night, she brought her cubs down with her, creating a unique opportunity to witness their sweet interactions.
Survival is tough for mountain lion mothers. Even with high levels of competition for food, these mothers often take care of their young for a full two years. They are also actively hunted.
When considering the threats mountain lions must encounter on a day-to-day basis, these previously unseen moments are all the more remarkable.
