Spotlight On: The Omega Speedmaster, as seen in Movies.

The Omega Speedmaster is a classic watch, with an iconic heritage and a strong following.

Its story is well-known among the watch community, but no other medium has helped the general public know the Speedy, more than film.

The Speedmaster began to appear in films as early as the 1960s, but its most memorable and popular appearances were in movies about the moon missions.

Today, we still see the Speedmaster in many films, as the go-to watch, when a character needs a top-shelf timepiece. Here are our favorite Speedmaster apperances on the big screen.

There is no movie more important to the Omega Speedmaster, than 1995’s Apollo 13. The movie helped spread the message of Omega, and its decades long connection to NASA, to the general public.

Apollo 13 chronicles the third moon landing mission launched in April of 1970, the events that led to its near disaster, and their safe return to the earth.

Tom Hanks, who played commander Jim Lovell; Kevin Bacon, and the film’s NASA astronauts, all wore Omega Speedmaster Professional watches. The Speedy’s important role in the mission’s return was also shown in the film.

An explosion on the vessel required it to change course, circle the moon without landing, and enter the Earth’s atmosphere at the right angle. The Omega Speedmaster proved pivotal in precisely timing the burns that allowed Apollo 13 to journey safely back home.

It wasn’t until 2019 that a film about the moon missions would again be made. This time, First Man chronicles the days leading to the fateful Apollo 11 mission of 1969.

First Man tells the story of how man first made it to the surface of the moon.

Ryan Gosling plays astronaut Neil Armstrong of the history-making crew, also known as the first person to ever walk on the moon.

Director Damien Chazelle was adamant on telling this story with authenticity, and that meant getting every detail—including the watches—just right.

Some of the Omega Speedmaster watches worn on the film were not mere props, but actual pieces of history.

To be as authentic as possible, Gosling and the rest of the astronauts in the film, were outfitted with the same Omega Speedmaster references worn by the crew during the 1969 lunar mission. 

Omega provided the film with four distinct models, some of them period-correct recreations you’ll only ever see in the film, while the others were pulled directly from Omega’s archives and loaned to the production.

The Speedy has also made it to mainstream movies even without the NASA connection, usually as the choice timepiece of the lead character.

In 2009’s State of Play, we saw Russell Crowe wearing an Omega Speedmaster 50th anniversary watch.

The timepiece commemorates a half-century of the Speedmaster since its launch in 1957; and comes with the Seahorse emblem on the dial.
The following year, George Clooney wore a leather strap Speedy in The American.

Clooney played Jack, a gunsmith and contract killer, and he wears the Speedy in many of his high-octane scenes.

Being an Omega Ambassador, George always wears an Omega watch in his films.

In 2016’s Money Monster, he wore a highly unusual and rarely seen watch – a solid yellow gold Speedmaster.

In the film, Clooney plays the host of a finance show, and while he would typically be cast with a gold Rolex Day-Date or an Audemars Piguet, he chose the more obscure, but certainly opulent, gold Speedmaster,

With its timeless design and illustrious history, the Omega Speedmaster sure deserved its starring role in these films.
