At Lloyd Podiatry, we fabricate custom made orthotics from a three-dimensional cast of your feet. Unlike light scanning methods, which can measure length and width, we are able to accurately measure "the hills and valleys" of your foot anatomy. Like Google Earth, foot scanning with light relies on computer algorithms to simulate a 3-D variation of the foot architecture. In our opinion, this is not nearly as accurate as a physical measurement. Although interesting, there is always something "off" with a
3-D Google Earth visualization of a building compared to the real thing.
Foot scans with light are very quick because a lot of steps are eliminated. It is also less costly for the manufacturer, but in our opinion, less accurate and less satisfying.
Our laboratory uses a tried and true 3-D technology to create an accurate computer foot model. Next, we factor in the prescription, body weight, and performance characteristics desired. The computer algorithm takes this data and runs it through our CAD/CAM system to mill out the biomechanical orthotic. We plan more videos on this in the future. Thanks for watching.
