Learn Russian verbs and prefixes (intermediate). СТАТЬ - to become.
In Russian a tiny prefix put at the beginning of a verb can completely change its meaning. In this lesson you will learn how prefixes change the meaning of the verb СТАТЬ" (to become).

Стать - to become
Perfective verb, so it’s used in past, future and infinitive forms.
Imperfective form - становиться.
The verbs “стать” is followed by instrumental case.
Он хочет стать врачом.
He wants to become a doctor.
Я хочу стать врачом.
I want to become a doctor.
Он стал учителем.
He became a teacher.
Она станет известной актрисой.
She will become a famous actress.
Перестать - to stop
Перестань шуметь!
Stop making noise!
Хватит, перестань!
Enough, stop it!
Застать - to catch/ to find/ to ambush
Его невозможно застать дома.
It’s impossible to find him at home.
Застать врасплох.
To catch by surprise.
Ты застал меня врасплох таким вопросом!
You caught me by surprise with this question. (I didn’t expect you to ask this question)
Пристать - to stick to something
Чего ты пристал ко мне?
Why are you bothering me?
Usually used as “to bother”
Ну чего ты пристал со своими вопросами?
Why are you bothering me with your questions?
Отстать (от + genitive) - to get off/ to fall behind
Ты отстал от жизни!
You are behind the times!
Отстань от меня!
Get off me! Don’t bother me!
Я так отстала от жизни!
I don’t keep track of new things!
