Davos, Switzerland, in Summer

As far as the World outside Switzerland is concerned, it was first aware of Davos as a ski resort next to Klosters, itself a winter playground for the rich and famous. However for four days a year Davos now eclipses its expensive neighbour when it hosts the World Economic Forum, a talking shop for Heads of State, billionaires and the CEOs of some of the most powerful businesses in the world.
But my film ignores all the above, and shows you instead another, probably more attractive Davos, which is the city in the summer months – a time to explore the scenic beauty and wonderful alpine countryside that the attendees at the Forum do not ever see!
Here are a few of the best moments from this three and a half minute video:
Right at the start notice the River Landwasser, a natural feature which has been controlled by Man into a canalised straight-line passage through the town (you’ll see it a few times on our journey). Jakobshorn is a mountain above Davos with 14 skiing pistes in the Davos-Klosters range. As with most Swiss alpine resorts, the cable car remains open in Summer. Next the railway station: Davos Platz is the part of the town that is in the Landwasser valley, where a lot of the hotels are. The other district, Davos Dorf, is closer to the ski runs and a bit quieter. The two parts of the town are connected by The Promenade, a main street of shops, bars and restaurants. One of the features of Davos (indeed of Switzerland) is the close juxtaposition of traditional architecture with modern styles of building – a good example is 58 seconds in where the church is close to a shopping mall.
At 1 minute 15 seconds you get a good idea of how relatively quiet Davos is in Summer: the Promenade is virtually devoid of traffic and shoppers. A display board about Thomas Mann (1 min 53 seconds) reminds us that the German author set one of his novels in Davos after his wife was treated for tuberculosis in the sanatorium in the town. The Kirchner Museum (1 min 57 seconds) is an art gallery displaying the expressionist paintings of the German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 – 1938).
Even in Summer, you’ll probably want to have a look at the Congress Centre (2 mins 18) just because it is so famous. A great thing about Davos in Summer is that alpine scenery is right above the city and so in your sight almost all the time. (3 mins 02).
