Colby Covington's Act Is Not Like Henry Cejudo's | Luke Thomas

Following UFC 245, there's been a suggestion UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo is emulating Colby Covington for 'cringe' attention. This is a fundamental misreading of the situation.

In turns out Covington's deep immersion into Trump world has significantly raised his visibility. He has literally befriended the Trump family and fashioned himself a MAGA icon. That has brought not merely critics inside MMA, but after his loss to Kamaru Usman, all manner of Trump critics who have no relationship to mixed martial arts otherwise. In a similar fashion, media figures and other celebrities who publicly support Donald Trump have extended their support to Covington. He has become an avatar for one side of a contemporary political divide, galvanizing support from the like minded while repulsing their opponents.

Cejudo, by contrast, largely produces content whose work never extends beyond the MMA media ecosystem. The idea these are comparable acts is simply not correct.
