Ivy Jane— Cutest Moment!
Ivy Jane is 16 months old, and we’re constantly being surprised by her language skills as well as her understanding of the situation around her. ❤️ This is an adorable moment. I’ve watched it at least a dozen times and laughed and smiled each time because it’s just too cute!
Sharing can be a hard concept for little ones to grasp. Before the age of 2, “sharing” in their mind feels as if they are saying their final farewell to whatever it is they are being asked to part with. But eventually, they start to figure out that taking turns means they will in fact get another chance to have that coveted toy in their possession, and the process gets easier. We set 5-minute timers with popular toys, so everyone gets a turn. For tiny ones, once their turn is up, we often try to use diversion or distraction (i.e. pointing their attention to something else, swapping for another fun toy, etc).
In light of their age, we often show deference to the littlest ones and try to encourage the older kids model sharing with them as much as is possible (the exception, of course, being extra special or breakable items). Board games or stacking blocks in turn are some fun ways to practice taking turns!
It’s sweet when a young person starts to catch on and can hand a toy over for someone else’s to play with without a grumbling or complaining. We try to encourage them, “Be happy for that person whenever it’s their turn. You can think of the enjoyment it brings to them, and you can choose to be happy for them!” This is something that will benefit them throughout their lives. It’s a beautiful thing when we learn to think of others before ourselves.
“In humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4).
“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God” (Hebrews 13:16).
“God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
