'Pistol' Pete Maravich: The Most Offensively Skilled Basketball Player of All Time
Narrated by I.P. Freely. Through dedication and an obsession to be the best Pete Maravich was able to do whatever it took to be the best, and with physical limitations he did all he could every single to day to accomplish that goal. Through countless hours of rigorous dexterity drills that helped him neurologically have the quickest hands giving him a tremendous advantage when dribbling, passing, shooting, or even stealing the ball. Quick reactions are a big advantage in basketball, and so are strong hands that are also trained properly to have feathery touch when handling, passing, or shooting the ball. Though Pete's NBA accolades should have been greater for the kind of talent he was, he will always be the greatest college basketball player ever by a wide margin (at least as far as statistics go) as he averaged 44 points per game for 4 seasons at LSU. His best NBA season statistically was MVP worthy (3rd in voting) as he averaged 31.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 8.2 FTA, playing a league high 41.7 minutes per game, and he had 2 other seasons of that caliber statistically. With the right team and coach he would have won some championships for sure, and it would have been fun to see him play as a Celtic instead of only getting to be there for just the last part of the season signed off of waivers in his last season as a pro, where he was only averaged just over 10 minutes per game coming off the bench for the already very well established Celtics, who lost in the ECF to the Sixers. If his knees would have held up better he probably would have got his chance to be on a championship team as the Celtics won a title the next season, but it wasn't just his knees that hurt, Pete's soul was always looking for something greater outside of his passion for the game. Though Pete should have never been able to do what he did, medically a heart condition should have ended his life when he was a teenager, so it was a miracle of his own making that let him live to 40 years of age while accomplishing so much in the sport he loved, and being an example that anyone can do anything if they have the will and passion to do it.
