The film is based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, a nine-year-old corn seller who grew up in the impoverished Katwe slum. She discovers chess and thrives in the escapism the game gives her. It becomes clear to other members of the chess group that she is gifted, she progresses to become a child chess prodigy who pursues her dream of becoming a grand master.
