SOUTH AFRICA Mapungubwe National Park west (12 April 2012)
In 2012 we visited South Africa for the first time with our HD video camera.
We started at Mapungubwe and then traveled to Kruger.
Join us on our game drives day by day.
Today we traveled again to the western part of the park. At Maloutswa Hide we saw some herds of animals coming to the waterhole: impala, blue wildebeest and eland antelope.
(partly original sounds)
Mapungubwe National Park is situated in Limpopo Province. It is located by the Kolope River, south of the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers . It is on the border with Botswana and Zimbabwe, and forms part of the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area. The park was established in 1995 and covers an area of over 28,000 hectares. Mapungubwe National Park is renowned for its scenic landscape, with sandstone formations, woodlands, riverine forest and baobab trees.
The park is divided in two parts: the western and eastern part. The park has tried to unify it into one park. This unfortunately has been completed yet so you'll have to exit the park to visit the western section, if you are coming from the eastern section and vice versa. The middle of the park belongs to a private lodge and requires reservations beforehand in order to visit that part. The National Park's reception, where you check in, is next to the eastern section's entrance so bear that in mind when you have booked a campsite in the western section. Its about half an hour's drive and the gates close around 18:00. There are only gravel roads in the park but most of them suitable for 2wd cars. There is no fuel station nearby (70 km away) and snacks and refreshments are only available in the eastern part.
We stayed at Leokwe rest camp (eastern part).
