Our genes are called the functional units of heredity. They are made up of DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid. They are responsible for making instructions in protein synthesis. Rare genetic mutations are effects of changes to the genetic information in the cell. Mutations are responsible for the huge diversity of genes. Also, mutations are the source of new genes. Small scale mutations are called point mutations and are divided into two categories - substitutions and deletions or insertions. In base substitutions, it can either replace or change one nucleotide and its partner with another pair of nucleotides. It can be categorized into silent (no effect on the sequence), missense (effects depend on the new location within the protein), and nonsense (how close the mutation to the wild type sequence). In the pair deletion or insertion, it either adds or deletes nucleotides in a sequence. Rare genetic mutations can create a drastic change that could be harmful or beneficial to the person infected. It may be deemed to be attractive to other people but also tend to be life-threatening for others.
