Why I'm Planning to Spend $70,000 on a Photo

Okay, I know it sounds insane, but it's really not once we break it down a bit.

Over the last year I've opened up a whole new world of photography with the discovery of shooting film and making prints in "vintage" darkroom. After studying some of the greats and masters of photography, I began looking more closely into Ansel Adams.

Sure, everyone knows his name, but do most people know WHY they know his name? I know I didn't before learning film photography. He completely revolutionized the photographic process by developing the zone system. But to me he did much more than that. He captured the great wilderness of America and had his work celebrated across the world. I would argue that his photographs sparked some of the first environmentalist thoughts about why we need to protect and preserve these amazing natural places.

Living in North America, I feel like a massive part of our culture is steeped in the wild and outdoors. Fishing, camping, hiking, 4x4ing, climbing, skiing, and everything in between. We are a culture built around nature and Ansel Adam's work helped bring that conversation to a world-wide audience.

Pair all of that with the fact that original art can make for a precious financial investment, and that it simply looks amazing, and we have a recipe for success.

That's why I want to buy an original Ansel Adams.
