Donald Crowhurst was an engineer and weekend sailor who decided to enter the 1968 Golden Globe Race around the world. It was the first solo, non-stop yacht race around the world. Only eight other men entered, including Robin Knox-Johnston, Nigel Tetley, and Bernard Moitessier. All were trying to emulate the heroic feat of Francis Chichester who was the first person to sail around the world solo the previous year.
