A New Day for the Global South? Shifts in CELAC, South Africa and the Horn
Manuel “Tortuguita” Teran was shot and killed by Atlanta police on January 18th, while defending the Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta, GA from destruction due to a planned police training facility, known as “Cop City.” Since 2021, activists have been fighting the proposed $90 million, 350-acre training center that would serve as a mock city of Atlanta to test out urban warfare. Kamau Franklin, Organizer with Community Movement Builders, discusses the ongoing Stop Cop City Movement and the deadly repression activists are facing.
Brazil and Argentina announced that they are making plans for creating a new currency for trade in Latin America. The currency, called the “Sur” would create the world’s second-largest currency bloc and aim to “boost regional trade and reduce reliance on the US dollar.” The leaders of the countries will discuss the plans at the seventh summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), hosted by Argentina. Ben Norton, Journalist and Editor of Geopolitical Economy Report, explains how the development of the Sur directly challenges the hegemony of the US dollar as what the CELAC summit means for Latin American integration.
For decades, the US-led unipolar order has dominated the world system, but a new multipolar world is rapidly emerging. South Africa is a major player in defining the rising era of multipolarity and in 2023 assumed the chairmanship of BRICS, the bloc comprising of the five leading emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva are both in Zambia this week seeking to woo the country away from Russian and Chinese influence. While in the country, Yellen discussed Zambia’s debt crisis, propagating the narrative of Chinese “debt-trap diplomacy.” Fred M'membe, President of the Socialist Party Zambia, explains the debt crisis in Zambia and the brutal austerity measures imposed by the IMF loan program on the country.
