Royal Navy Type 45 Destroyers at HM Naval Base Devonport

Using Google Earth to explore the docks at HM Naval Base Devonport in Plymouth, England, I spot several sleek modern warships — Royal Navy Type 45 destroyers.

Commissioned between 2009 and 2013, the Type 45 class, also known as the Daring-class, was built for advanced air defense. These ships are equipped with the Sea Viper missile system, powerful radar, and modern command systems, designed to protect fleets from airborne threats at long range.

Each ship is about 500 feet long and powered by gas turbines and diesel generators, reaching speeds over 30 knots. Their primary role is air defense, but they can also support surface, subsurface, and humanitarian missions.

Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe, serves as a key home port and maintenance hub for several of these destroyers.

Today, the Type 45s remain frontline assets of the Royal Navy, combining stealth, speed, and cutting-edge technology to meet modern maritime threats.
