Indian Countries Outside of India

Why are there so many countries around the world that have a South Asian (predominantly Indian) majority or plurality? How on Earth did there come to be many "Indian" descended countries outside of India itself?

Although many in the West (and even many in India) are not aware of this, there are a handful of countries and territories around the world with small to large Indian descended populations from the colonial era who predate the more recent wave of Indian migrants that have seen tens of millions heading to the Middle East, North America and Europe. These countries include Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad, Guyana and many others, who, although containing many other cultures and peoples as well, have a substantial Indian-descended population, who have quite the interesting history. Thanks for watching!
