The water crisis is an emerging issue on a global scale. It's estimated that as much as 95% of the freshwater on the planet is used for things other than drinking and in developing nations, most of the freshwater is used by agriculture & industry, leaving very little and often polluted water for human consumption.

So, what are the contributing factors to our global water crisis? And how will this affect us in the West?

Pepsi and Coke also make millions not just by bottling tap water, but also stealing the water from local communities according to a number of studies.

As the pandemic spread in the US, and panic-buying set in, bottled water sales increased 57% over the same period from the year before

Coca-Cola makes Dasani – the company’s well-known bottled water that generated more than $1billion in US sales last year at the company’s Detroit plant by purchasing, treating, and bottling tap water before selling it at a significant mark-up to consumers. Pepsi bottles its Aquafina water brand in Detroit in a similar way.

Why is TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd), Samsung & Intel building chip factories in Arizona?

Although climate change is being blamed on water scarcity, a recent study blew this out of the water and found that an increasing population was found to be about 4 times more draining on water supplies, than climate change.

Groundwater then, is the largest source of usable, fresh water in the world. In many parts of the world, especially where surface water supplies are not available, domestic, agricultural, and industrial water needs can only be met by using the water beneath the ground. And these are quickly being depleted.

I also predict that water shortages will cause mass migration from poorer countries to wealthier countries in the near future so that’s another one to watch out for.

In California, Farmers are destroying their own crops because there’s not enough water to keep the crops alive anymore

The American west is drying out as the region faces an unprecedented drought.

Today’s water crisis in this region stems from decisions made over a century ago. In 1906, the Bureau of Reclamation drained wetlands to create farmland, disrupting the careful balance of water needed to sustain others in the basin.

Farmers are now having to destroy their own crops as there’s not enough water to sustain them. Eventually, a lack of water and dying crops will be a problem that impacts what produce you'll find at your grocery store because such a high amount of your food comes from the west coast

In the UK then, the public is completely unaware of the UK's water problems

The findings of a recent survey said that 72% of the British public believe the UK has enough water to meet daily demands. However, the public remains largely unaware of the risks that population growth and pollution is having on water supplies.

Currently, daily household water usage on a per person is 143 litres. In comparison, per person water usage in the 1960s was around 85 litres. And that was with a much smaller population.

So, which countries have the most fresh water?...

The USA & Canada actually ranks 3rd & 4th in the World for the most available fresh water, the UK & Australia, not so great.
