Transcript & ID:

Title Slide: MCDHH logo. Inspector General Warns Public About New Social Security Benefit Suspension Scam. For immediate release, March 20, 2020.

Screen then shows Fraud Advisory release in full with Office of the Inspector General seal at the top.

The fraud advisory release document is on the left half of the screen with the text “Gail S. Ennis, Inspector General of Social Security” below it. Christopher Johnson signs on the right.

CHRISTOPHER: The Inspector General warns the public about a new Social Security benefit suspension scam. The Inspector General of Social Security, Gail S. Ennis, is warning the public about fraudulent letters threatening suspension of Social Security benefits due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) related office closures. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will not suspend or discontinue benefits because their offices are closed.

Fraud advisory release document disappears. In its place is a list of things the Social Security office will never ask of you. Christopher lists the items off in sign language.

CHRISTOPHER: The Office of Social Security will never do the following:
1. Threaten you with benefit suspension, arrest, or other legal actions unless you pay a fine or fee;
2. Promise a benefit increase or other assistance in exchange for payment;
3. Require payment by retail gift card, cash, wire transfer, internet currency, or prepaid debit card;
4. Demand secrecy from you in handling a Social Security-related problem;
5. Send official letters or reports containing personally identifiable information via email.

Fraud advisory release image returns to the left half of the screen. Christopher continues signing.

CHRISTOPHER: If you have received suspicious correspondence about an alleged problem with your Social Security account, please report it by doing the following.

Christopher disappears from the screen and is replaced with the text “Report Social Security Scams: https://oig.ssa.gov”

The webpage for https://oig.ssa.gov appears. After scrolling past the main header image of the page, there are two red buttons. The one on the left is prefaced by text that says “Report Social Security Scams.” The button itself says “Submit a report.” A cursor moves in a circle around this button to indicate that one should click here. Then, the fraud advisory and web link text return to the screen.
