France: The largest dam removal worldwide 2017-2022

The Sélune, a coastal river in Normandy, flows into the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.Historically frequented by a large population of Atlantic salmon, this river has seen its migratory fish populations almost disappear from the basin. Two dams, 16 m and 36 m high, which blocked access to upstream areas of the basin, have been removed between 2019 and 2022, opening up more than 70 km of the Sélune. The Vezins dam is the largest dam removal project in Europe. A large-scale project defended by environmental associations, decided by the State, difficult to accept locally for several years, but which is beginning to revive a river and create new local initiatives. An ambitious and lucid choice, in a context where the restoration of nature and water quality is becoming urgent.
