People have inhabited the island since 5200 BC, they were Stone Age hunters or farmers, from Sicily . Neolithic settlements have been discovered in both open areas and caves, such as Għar Dalam . Around 3500 BC, a civilization with megalithic temple builders appeared. They built megalithic temples that are some of the oldest in the world, located at Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra . After 2500 BC, Malta became less populated, but then became home to Bronze Age inhabitants , residing in places like Borġ in-Nadur . They built Malta's first forts.

Malta was ruled by the Phoenicians , Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs before it was captured by the County of Sicily in 1091. The island from then on became part of the Kingdom of Sicily before being given to the Order of St. John the Governor along with Gozo and Tripoli in 1530. In 1565, the Order of Governors and the Maltese resisted a major Ottoman invasion , later known as the Great Siege of Malta . The Order of Governors ruled Malta for more than 250 years and built many architectural monuments, including the capital Valletta . In 1798, France, under the command of Napoleon , occupied Malta and ruled from 1798 to 1800. France was driven out after the Maltese rebelled against them. In 1800, the British took control of Malta and it became a British protectorate , and then a colony a few years later. The British ruled for about 150 years, and Malta became officially independent in 1964. Ten years later, the State of Malta became the Republic of Malta. Malta joined the European Union in 2004 and adopted the Euro four years later.
