How to Control your Emotions | Difference Between a Reaction and a Response

What do you do to control your emotions? Do you have any scriptures or practices you use to sidestep a poor reaction and instead choose a righteous response?

The difference between a reaction and a response is simple. A reaction is usually quick and emotional, while a response is usually logical and thought out, and one leads to way more regrets than the other.

Knowing how to control your emotions is a skill. It doesn't come naturally for most. Knowing that Satan is inclined to incite a reaction can be helpful in getting us to pay attention to what's happening to us and around us. Our emotions can get away from us at times, and that's what Satan is hoping for. In those moments we tend to react in ways we regret.

Responding righteously doesn't happen by accident. Reminding ourselves to take time out to take a time out, memorizing scriptures, stopping to pray are all great ways to keep ourselves having outbursts.

People who can control their emotions aren't mute, it just means they choose their words carefully. Jesus gave a good response in John 8, in fact it was a perfect response, and he didn't have to use that many words to deliver it.

Know, you can have an emotional response, and you and I can react well. But we would all be well served to press pause from time to time to gather our thoughts. When tension is high, take a time out.
