Admiral Rob Bauer, Chairman of NATO's Military Committee, has expressed serious concern over the declining supply of ammunition from Western countries to Ukraine. Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum, he said that ammunition is almost exhausted and that governments and defense companies need to increase the pace of production.
Admiral Bauer emphasized that NATO countries have not invested enough in the military sphere for many years and that is why many countries' arsenals were inadequate when they started supplying ammunition to Ukraine. It is known that Ukraine fires thousands of artillery rounds daily at the Russian fronts and that a significant part of this ammunition is supplied by NATO countries.
Bauer said liberal economies may not be able to afford to produce enough ammunition for armies during wartime. "We need larger volumes. Liberal economies that produce exactly what is needed when it is needed may be good for many things, but they are not good for armies during a war."
British Defense Secretary James Heappey also said that Western countries appear to be running low on ammunition and called on NATO members to invest more in defense. He also stressed the importance of achieving the 2 percent defense spending target. "If not now, when there is a war in Europe, then when?" Heappey asked, emphasizing that Ukraine must be supported every day of the war.
Finally, the NATO alliance must be strengthened and member states must stick to their commitments, Bauer said, adding that the failure of each country to meet its 2 percent defense spending commitment is a big problem. He said that the 2 percent target should serve as a floor and that countries must fulfill their commitments in order to maintain confidence in the alliance.
