Today, we’re looking at an upgrade that combines two racing games into one. Downforce, by Restoration Games, is card-driven racing game in which players control each of six cars barreling down a track, while trying to increase the odds that the car they own, and the ones they’ve bet money on, come out in the lead. Meanwhile, Monopoly Gamer: Mario Kart is already a bit of a mashup in its own right, taking the basic foundation of Monopoly and adding Mario Kart inspired power ups and special abilities.
For today’s experiment, let’s take the best of both worlds, and incorporate Mario Kart shenanigans into the racing game Downforce - adding a few layers of controlled chaos and surprises into the mix.
You will need one copy of Downforce, by Restoration Games, one copy of Monopoly Gamer: Mario Kart edition, and, preferably, at least two of the six Mario Kart booster packs that are available - each featuring an additional different color racer. I’ll get back to these in a minute, but they’ll be necessary to replace all six of the little cars that come in Downforce.
Monopoly Gamer: Mario Kart edition includes four characters, which can be used to replace the following Downforce cars: Mario (red), Princess Peach (alternate red), Luigi (green), and Toad (blue). Obviously, the base game of Mario Kart Monopoly doesn’t include enough characters to fully deck out Downforce. Which is where the Monopoly Gamer booster packs come in. For the full experience, I recommend picking up at least three expansion packs, which will add the characters Bowser (yellow), Donkey Kong (orange), and a Shy Guy (black). Additionally, the remaining three booster packs could be used to provide Yoshi (for an alternate green), Rosalina (an alternate blue), and Metal Mario (an alternate black).
Doing this is actually pretty simple, as all we’ll really need to do is determine a way to populate the board with power-ups the cars can acquire, randomize which power-up a car receives, and determine rules for how each of those power ups operate. And surprisingly, or perhaps unsurprisingly depending on what your expectations are, these additional rules fold into Downforce rather seamlessly.
For the power-up placement, various tokens or dice could be placed along the track. In this example, I’ve placed them in several strategic locations for demonstration purposes. However, it’s also been suggested to place them at the track’s yellow “betting” lines, which I’ll come back to in a moment. Regardless of where they’re located, entering a space containing a power-up adds a randomly-selected item to that car’s inventory.
As for which how to determine which power-up a car receives, Monopoly Gamer: Mario Kart also includes this fancy “Power Up” die, which provides a way to randomly do just that. The die includes banana peels, lightning, a green shell, a blue shell, and coins on two sides.
