Ever since the original Renault Espace of 1984, the French have had a penchant for people carriers.

Citroën has no less than four of these multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) in its line-up, and the new C4 Picasso is likely to be its strongest seller.

Nonetheless, this car will take some getting used to. Its futuristic styling looks like nothing else on the road.

However, under its space-age skin, the C4 Picasso is fairly conventional. It seats five, with three individual rear chairs that slide and fold flat with the floor. A seven-seat Grand Picasso arrives in spring 2014.

There are four engines to choose from, all 1.6 litres in capacity: 90bhp and 115bhp diesel or 120bhp and 155bhp petrol. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, or you can pay £500 extra for a six-speed automatic.
