PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE: Frege on Ideas vs Thoughts

Thanks so much to my subscribers for your patience and staying with my channel! In this video, we will investigate Frege's distinction between thoughts and ideas. Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) argues against Locke's empiricist claim that language only ever picks out temporal content. Such is necessarily true of ideas (sense impressions), but not true of thoughts (i.e., propositions), which are timeless and hold independently of anyone's ideas about them. The upshot is that no two people A and B can ever have the same idea X, but the same two people A and B can have the same thought Y. This thesis been the subject of much controversy in the philosophy of language. But whether you are an empiricist, a rationalist, or are on the fence about the metaphysics of language, Frege's argument demands your attention if you are interested in leading an Examined Life in the 21st century. : )
