Fluid & Hormones | IV Fluids (Isotonic, Hypotonic, & Hypertonic)
How do isotonic solutions, hypotonic solutions and hypertonic solutions differ from each other, and what are the key concepts the NCLEX wants RN nursing students and LPN students to know about fluid and electrolyte imbalances?
Hypotonic solutions (00:20) contain Low osmolality with less concentration of solutes.
0.45% NaCl sodium chloride
0.33% NaCl sodium chloride
0.225% NaCl sodium chloride
2.5% dextrose in water
Hypertonic solutions (6:23) contain higher concentration of solutes (high osmolality)
3% NS - Normal saline
5% NS - Normal saline
D10W
D51/2 NS
D50W
Isotonic solutions (9:27) contain equal amounts of solutes and fluid (no fluid shifts)
0.9% NS normal saline
LR - Lactated ringers
