The Crying Game: Kate Nicholson at TEDxGoldenGatePark

Kate Nicholson discusses the role of crying in child development.

Kate Nicholson is an intrepid explorer in the strange world of babies and toddlers. Through her writing and research into child development she brings back dispatches from the front to provide aid and comfort to shell-shocked parents. With down to earth and practical advice, Kate helps parents understand the benefits of this tumultuous time, the virtue of tantrums (yes, it's true) and how to appreciate that writhing child, all puffy eyed and gasping on the floor. Just like how the observer changes what's observed, parents play an active role in how children perceive themselves simply by approving or not approving. Kate's surprising conclusions about crying have far-reaching implications not only for parents of small children, but also for the emotional health of society as a whole.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
