i24NEWS DESK | Story (related): Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering a two-phase plan of applying sovereignty to West Bank areas, Israel Hayom newspaper reported Wednesday.
Under the Middle East peace plan unveiled by US President Donald Trump, Israel has been given a green light to annex some 30 percent of the West Bank.
However, one of the options Netanyahu is considering is to start off with 10 percent, beginning with settlements located deep into the area.
After that, the Palestinian side would be invited to hold negotiations; if no talks materialize, Israel would go ahead and apply sovereignty to the remaining 20 percent, the newspaper reports.
Under the coalition agreement between Netanyahu and Defense Minister and Alternative Prime Minister Benny Gantz, annexation can be put to a vote starting from July 1.
However, reports have been emerging recently that the United States, whose blessing is needed for the plan to go ahead, seeks Gantz's nod to the move.
The defense minister hailed Trump's plan as a historic opportunity on multiple occasions. However, in the run-up to the recent elections and during the coalition talks, he reportedly signaled a preference for working more closely with the Palestinians and the international community on the matter.
