Can You Use Any Sand To Make Concrete?

While you could use any kind of sand to make concrete in theory, unfortunately, there are many sand options that would produce poor or low quality concrete. In order to be good for the purpose of making concrete, sand should be clean. This means it should be free of all forms of contaminants and especially organic debris. In addition to being clean and washed, sand for concrete and mortar purposes should be rough and jagged in shape if you were to look at it under a microscope or magnifying glass. Tumbled or rounded sand, as found in something like play sand, has had all of the sharp edges and irregular shaped rounded off which makes play sand look more spherical under close inspection. This makes concrete or mortar substantially weaker than when you use a sand that has not been rounded. Beach and desert sand are too dirty, too full of impurities and even too rounded from constant tumbling in water or from wind to used for a quality concrete product. Additionally both beach and desert sand are too fine and would make weak concrete if you did use them.
