An opposed-piston engine is a piston engine in which each cylinder has a piston at both ends, and no cylinder head. Petrol and diesel opposed-piston engines have been used mostly in large-scale applications such as ships, military tanks, and factories. The opposed-piston engine has been around for over 100 years and is more efficient in almost every way. Unlike traditional four-stroke engines, OPEs combine two pistons per cylinder, working in opposite, reciprocating motion. Current manufacturers of opposed-piston engines include Fairbanks-Morse, Cummins and Achates Power.
