This is a clip of Tool performing “46 & 2” at the very first Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 1999. This video clip is credited to ToolTV on YouTube.

Back then, Coachella wasn’t a pop or influencer-driven event. It launched on October 9–10, 1999 in Indio, California, with a lineup built around alternative, electronic, and heavy music. Tool were one of the headliners alongside Rage Against the Machine and Beck.

Tickets were only about $50, attendance was far smaller than today, and the entire vibe was closer to a raw music festival than the polished, social-media-driven event Coachella eventually became.

This performance is a snapshot of that moment, when one of the biggest festivals in the world was still rooted in underground and alternative culture.
