How to Read an Image for Color Inspiration | Day 8 of The Grade

What's going on — it's Zay, and welcome back to The Grade. Today is Day 8 and we are talking about reading your image for color inspiration.
I show you a Spider-Verse inspired video I shot — heavy purple hues, blue and pink light filling the space. The inspiration came directly from the way the film uses color as characters move through portals. I break down exactly how I lit the shot — one light bouncing off the wall behind the couch in purple pink, another in light blue on the other side, both shot up into the wall so they blend in the middle instead of hitting directly and creating harsh light. That lighting choice came entirely from studying the color in the reference.
That is the whole lesson. Look at an image. Know where the color is coming from. Know where the light is coming from. Break it down. I promise once you start doing that you will watch movies differently. You will watch shows differently. It will completely change the way you interpret visuals.
Day 9 is next — warm tones versus cool tones and the messaging behind each one. Come back for it.
