Welcome back to the sewing school! To set the record straight, I’m not a professional ‘sewing-smith’, but I have been making my own clothes for decades and over these years, thanks to a lot of help from the professionals & including my mother, I feel I fully understand how the process works.

This new series is for those who wish to learn how to read a pattern, how and where to place the pattern pieces down onto fabric, size to suit and tips and trick necessary to make your garment look neat and tidy and wearable. TBH, it’s all very simple once you start the process. The pattern maker, makes everything super easy, it’s just a matter of fully briefing yourself with the instructions as provided, closely examining the illustrations and then transferring them to what you intend making. STEP by STEP.

If you are a beginner, look for patterns that clearly indicate 'easy or beginners' or as I’ve discovered 'under 2 hours'. This means that’s all the time it takes to make!

The dress I want to start our journey on today is what I call my ‘working girls – every day’ dress better known as a pinafore dress. It’s a pull-over the head dress that can be worn on its own or with a top underneath. The best part, there are no darts & no zips to be installed.

Great! No mucking around fiddly stuff to contend with, and the best thing - from this basic pattern you can alter and add features like pockets etc.
The pattern is by SIMPLICITY & the reference number is 9830. It’s an older style pattern and can be found at www.pattern-walk.com along with lots of other similar styles. However, its well worth checking out current modern day pattern houses like:
- Butterick
- New Look
- McCalls
- Burda
- Vogue
to name but a few!

The patterns come in a range of sizes – most often in multitude or various sizes – 6, 8, 10, 12 or 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 etc.

These sizes are often what is considered universal stock standard sizes or those commercially / off the shelf or rack sizing. So, say you were a standard size 6, then you would need to purchase that size pattern. Unfortunately, we are not always ‘stock-standard’, but with these sized patterns, if you are a bust size 30” with a waist measurement of 23” with a hip measurement of 40, a multi sized pattern is your friend.

I’ll share how to achieve these measurement in the course of the coming video tutorials.

Included in the pattern makers instructions, you are also given details information on the BEST fabrics to create your garment. Some outfits require specific fabric. The pinafore I am demonstrating requires stretch knit, but thanks to its roomy sizing, I could also use cotton and cotton blends, suede, synthetic leather, denim, linen or corduroy.

You will also be instructed on how much fabric you will require for the basic stock standard sizing. I ALWAYS allow for more, especially if I want to add pockets etc.

On the back of the pattern, it will tell you the best types of fabric that can be used to create your garment along with any other requirement like interfacing, buttons, thread etc.

For today’s project you will need the following –
- Sewing machine – needles – I like ballpoint because it’s stretch fabric
- Pattern
- Fabric
- Tape measure
- Ruler
- Pins
- Sharp scissors
- Parchment paper or similar – this will be used to make a pattern for a pocket.
- Ironing board & iron
