Movie Tamil Review – Matka King (2026) | Amazon Prime Video

Quick Take: A gritty, slow burn period political crime drama that trades bullets for numbers. Matka King bets big on atmosphere and Vijay Varma and mostly wins.

Plot: Time period of Bombay between 1964-1975, Matka King follows Brij Bhatti, an ambitious cotton trader working so hard but he can’t get his desire and his boss is betrayed him. So he comes up with a plan Teaming up with a disgraced ex soldier who working as cooli and an upper class widow joined as a team and they are building this game called “Matka”, a gambling game that turns an elite pastime into a parallel economy. It spread across Mumbai and get familiar among Layman. What starts as hustle becomes an empire. But with power comes the police, political pressure, and betrayal from within. He faces too many political pressure and he was corners by the society. Finally is he comes out and survived or not ? One wrong move and the entire house of cards collapses.

What Works:

Vijay Varma is magnetic as Brij Bhatti. He plays him less like a Soft gangster and more like a sharp startup founder who just happens to run an illegal lottery called Matka. You root for him even when you shouldn’t.

Nagraj Manjule’s direction nails the 1960s Bombay vibe. The production design, costumes, and dialect feel lived in, the way he projected the ancient mumbai worked out very well and not like a set. It’s a deliberate, moody period piece.

The premise is fresh. A crime drama built around probability, risk, and a “numbers game” But the game and truth of the game enhanced the game to next level feels different from the usual Mumbai underworld sagas.

Strong ensemble: Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Gulshan Grover, and Siddharth Jadhav add solid weight to the world.

What Doesn’t:

Pacing dips mid season. Manjule takes his time building the empire, so episodes 3-5 feel stretched. The screenplay is slow and scratches audience. It’s more Scam 1992 than Sacred Games in tempo.
Emotional payoff is restrained. If you expect big mass moments or action, this isn’t that show. Because it’s narration is a normal common man build his own empire isn’t easy. It’s a character study with crime elements.

Final Verdict:

Matka King is a carefully crafted story about ambition, class, and how systems are built in the shadows of a new republic. How men and society colours are differentiated. Vijay Varma’s career best performance, and the story ends with a 2nd Season hint.
