Classical Andalusian Symphony

Andalusian classical music is a form of music found across the Maghreb (North Africa). Believed to originate from the courts of Cordoba in the 9th century, Andalusian music spread to the Maghreb following the Reconquista, when Muslims and Sephardic Jews were expelled from the Iberian peninsula. At the time, Cordoba was a leading manufacturer of musical instruments, including the oud (lute), rebab (rebec), quitara (guitar), naqareh (naker). The orchestral and instrumental elements of Andalusian music would later evolve into what we now consider European classical music. In the Maghreb, Andalusian music is poetic in form, known as the Andalusi nubah. Each nubah has five parts, called mizan, which correspond with a distinct rhythm. Andalusian orchestras usually hold over fifty instrumentalists; however, a small ensemble of the larger orchestra performed at our hotel in Tetouan.
