Female Pioneers of the Theosophical Movement | Susanne Hoepfl-Wellenhofer
Helena Blavatsky’s spiritual movement had an impact that was far-reaching. The first woman with such a presence in a male-dominated field, she paved the way for women as no one else before, and attracted other women who helped spread Theosophical ideas. Join us to find out more about two such women: Mary Gebhard and Clara Codd. The first Theosophical Lodge in Germany, the Germania Theosophical Society, was formed and met in Mary Gebhard’s house, and H. P. Blavatsky stayed with her on two occasions. She received a few letters from the Masters and saw the astral form of Master Morya. Clara Codd was an English Theosophist known for her work as a feminist, lecturer, teacher, and writer. She served as General Secretary of both the Australian and South African sections and during a Theosophical career of nearly 70 years, she traveled to five continents.
Susanne Hoepfl-Wellenhofer was born in Austria and has been living and working in the U.S. since 1986. Even before finding Theosophy in 2010, she had been following her own spiritual path, comparing religion, science, philosophy, and psychology for over 20 years. She is currently the president of the Washington, D.C. Lodge and recently created a course for the Online School of Theosophy. She has a law degree from the University of Graz and a master’s degree in educational technology from George Washington University, where she worked for 20 years before retiring in 2019. She continues to translate German to English, including texts from Theosophist Dr. Franz Hartmann, and she is also a yoga instructor. Learn more at spiritualityconsciousnessandme.com.
