Live Irish Myths episode 7: Sheelah, the wife of Saint Patrick?
In this episode, I talk about a 19th century tradition, probably based on much older beliefs, that Saint Patrick was married and that his wife was Sheelah or Saint Sheelah. Previous to the Great Famine, newspapers mention the celebration of St. Sheelah's Day as taking place on March 18th, the day after St. Patrick's Day. What is behind this old belief? And how might Sheelah be connected with the strange carved female figures called Sheela-na-gigs? And, is there a connection with ancient pre-Christian female deities in her story?
The purpose of Live Irish Myths is to provide a distraction and entertainment during the current Covid-19 outbreak, which has seen many western countries shut down. Hopefully the scientists and doctors will find a cure or beneficial treatment soon.
