1987 UGA JanFest Honor Band - Holocaust Suite, 4th Movement (Babi Yar)

W. Francis McBeth, renowned composer and conductor for wind band, was the guest clinician for the 1987 University of Georgia January High School Music Festival (JanFest) Honor Band. There was always much more to McBeth's own music, and the music of other composers he chose for his groups to play, than simply a beautiful melody or theme. He clearly liked to share with students music that was inspired by something. Clinic bands like the one performing here would work for many consecutive hours across several days to prepare their performance. The Honor Band opened their performance in '87 with Morton Gould's 4th movement to his 'Holocaust Suite' entitled 'Babi Yar'. Although a student in 1987 couldn't perform a quick Google search to see photographs of the horror of 'Babi Yar', the music itself painted the picture quite well. This piece memorializes a dark, dark chapter of human history, the Nazi massacre of more than 34,000 innocents at one place and time. It must have been very important in the mind of Francis McBeth to share that historical reference with his students.
