The Himalayan Monal pheasant, an iridescent wonder!

The Himalayan Monal pheasant is the National bird of Nepal. The males have magnificent metallic plumage with nine different colours and a striking crest. (It was the inspiration for the multi coloured bird 'Kevin' in the Pixar film Up.)The females are mainly brown and white with a white patch under their throat and have wonderful turquoise eye stripes. The large beaks of this pheasant are designed for digging out roots and finding food under snow. They are large but gentle birds and can quickly become tame within an aviary with the help of treats (peanuts in particular) The video footage is all shot in the UK.
